The Story
Ancient Judaean bronze coin, likely a Prutah, dating to the period of the First Jewish War (circa 66-70 CE) or a similar ancient Judaean issue. Metal: Bronze (AE). Obverse: Amphora with broad rim and two handles, surrounded by a largely off-flan or indistinct inscription. Reverse: Vine leaf on a stalk, surrounded by Paleo-Hebrew or related ancient script, partially visible as characters within the field. Surfaces show heavy dark green to black patina with rough, pitted texture typical of ancient base metal issues found in soil. Strike is off-center on both sides, with moderate to heavy wear obscuring finer details. A small suspension loop or casting remnant is visible at the bottom edge of the flan.
